Atlanta influences EVERYTHING. Over the past 30 years, Atlanta has become the Mecca of Black culture — a culture that has always defined what's hip for EVERYBODY. And it doesn't get hipper than hip-hop!
In his hit song, "Welcome to Atlanta", Jermaine Dupri poignantly called Atl "the new motown" because Atlanta is to current hip-hop what Motown was to R&B in the 1960's. While hip-hop has roots in many cities across the United States, Atlanta has unofficially become its capital city since the early 2000's. But even before that, rappers such as Outkast, Kilo, Cee-Lo, MC Shy D and many others blazed the path in the 1990's.
They couldn't have done it without the help of influential Atlanta DJs and clubs that broke the records, generating enough buzz in the streets to make huge hits that radio stations couldn't afford to ignore. Atlanta DJ Esco became famous by breaking Future records at the notorious Magic City strip club. Another huge Atlanta DJ Drama was no stranger to the sound of the underground. Ryan Cameron and Frank Ski became household names by putting Atlanta rap on the map. Atlanta DJ Jelly was the king of mixtapes, an important way for artists to generate buzz.
Atlanta DJs, rappers, producers, creatives and nightclubs are instrumental in cultivating a cool culture to export and influence the entire world. They don't call it Hotlanta because of the temperature, it's because Atlanta has become the hottest source of lit hip-hop culture and trends. Keep doing what you do best in the A!
